I've been living in Townsville for 3 years. Moved up here to study Marine Science at the University, and get closer to the reef.

Unfortunately, because the reef is so far out, the trips are quite expensive so its been a while since I've been able to blow bubbles.

I need to make friends with someone who owns a nice big boat!!

No I don't but I am diving the Yolanga out of Townsville in August (with Mike Ball) and very much looking forward to it. Any tips for the day I will have around the town until my flight out - tourist attractions, lunch spots or other things not to be missed?

There's a few things to do for the day in Townsville - there's an aquarium ("Reef HQ") and Tropical Museum.

The Strand is the beachfront, which has all been done up since the last big cyclone. Very touristy.

Billabong Sanctuary is a crocodile/native wildlife park about 15 mins south of the city. Its got amazing crocodile feeding shows, and gorgeous cute native wildlife like kangaroos, paddemelons, wallabies, etc.

Enjoy your dive!

hi scuba katt.

what about the dive club at uni? they have a boat... :eyebrow:

or just dive off the strand :D

alijtaylor, you might look into driving to the billabong...don't think that you could "wander" down there :))
and a place to have a nice DECENT lunch is at tim's surf and turf (close to the city mall), their meals are HUGE, yummy and not pricey.

otherwise, there is not much else to see around town other than scuba katt already suggested. relax, have a beer (or whatever) at the seaview (or wherever) and enjoy the memories of your dive at the yongala!

Hi Alison,

I also spent a day within the Billabong Sanctuary when I dived with Mike Ball last year in Jan/Feb. It's very nice there (Billabong and Mike Ball boat and of course, the Yongala ;) ). If you're going to Billabong, take your swimsuit, they have a small pool there and if it's hot it's nice to cool down in between... Don't forget to cuddle the koalas and the wombat!

Have fun,
Gaby
