I'm a Fish!
That is the question! Ha!
It helps me. I need to do it more. We all do.

Natasha, you know that it is better to journal than to not. It's harder to cheat if there's evidence of wrong-doing :)

I guess that after almost 4 months, all of this eating well and exercise has actually become habit. If I don't eat well, I don't fell well. If I don't get to work out, I feel like crap. It's just easier to stay with it at this point. Keeping a journal of some kind was important to me in the beginning, but not so much anymore. I even started to do some sort of triathlon training blog for my website, but my goodness, how boring would that be ;).

I'm actually motoring through week 4 (of 12) of my race training. I actually ran for 17 minutes straight this morning. 17 minutes!! When I started this in April, I couldn't even walk a mile in less than half an hour without feeling like crap for a few days. Saturday's run is 20 minutes, and it grows to 40 minutes by week 8. Whoddathunkit? Granted, we're not talking Olympic speeds or anything, but for a guy who is still 85 pounds overweight, I'm happy with it. One thing that helps is having something to do other than look at my watch. Since my DIR-F class, I've been going through the motions of S-Drills and Valve Drills while running. I'm sure that I look like a window licker, but it makes the run go by quickly and I don't have to endure the crazy looks from my wife while I lay on the couch doing Valve Drills.

If anyone has been tempted to try a tri but doesn't know where to start, I highly recommend Gale Berhardt's 'Training Plans for Multisport Athletes." Lots of good info and it covers training from your sprint to 13 hour ironmans. "Swimming Made Easy" by Terry Laughlin (Total Immersion) should be bundled with it too.

My 2psi,

LOL to your first line, Frank.

Yes, at times when I'm doing something I think..'do it so you can write it down'.
I have been swimming everyday and doing my own version of water areobics, since what I thought was a water areobics tape was only a booklet.

Anyway, it's not showing as much in the pounds as the inches. I can tell a difference in my jeans..so I guess that's a good thing.

P.S. I'm still afraid to bike ride after my last fall. I'm trying hard to get over my fear..but I have permanent face scares from the fall so it's hard to do.

Well, today was my second run for the week (E1/E2 pace) and I've managed to get down to a 16 minute mile! I couldn't even walk a mile in 20 minutes 4 months ago and I ran 5 quarter mile laps at the track today. In 20 MINUTES! I haven't felt this good about something in a long time. Actually, on thursday, I did outswim this skinny punk kid at the pool... I wish, just kidding. At this rate, I might be able to finish my race in about 2 hours and change. Actually, my biggest motivation has been the song "The Distance" by Cake. I can see it now - the crickets are chirping and the sun has set as I crawl across the finish line :)

Keep on keeping on everyone!

I know you are so right about journaling. I have used every excuse in the book to put off writing things down. STARTING tomorrow Sun Aug 1, 2004 I promise to do things the right way. Eat right, exercise, drink water etc etc. I have set a goal Jan 5, 2005 as my 1st goal I want to see what I can accomplish by my 50th b-day.

Counting the days

Is there going to be a DEMA / ScubaBoard get togather this year?

To Journal or not to Journal - Of course it shows the evidence, but I like the freedom. As my pastor says there are certain things you are free to do and there other things you are free not to do. Journaling tells me what I can and cannot do diet wise - So if I want that bowl of ice cream, I look at the rest of the day and if I have the available calories I can dig in. Or I can add in that extra hour of swimming at the beach to increase my caloric needs. Otherwise I don't have a choice - it needs to wait for tomorrow :-( For instance today I am at about a 3000 caloric deficit, but since I'm not hungry I'll trade it in for an extra pound of loss.

Tim

P.S. Ice Cream and chocolate ARE diet foods - just ask me ;-)
