My husband and I will be diving in Cozumel and then attending a wedding near Akumal next month. We'll be taking the ferry from Coz to Playa and most likely getting a taxi to the hotel in Akumal. Language shouldn't be an issue. We've traveled a bit and been to the area a few times but never near the ferry so I'm just curious as to what to expect.

Does anyone have any tips for hiring a taxi? Where to go? Is better to walk away from the pier and hire one down a few streets? Do we need to haggle/shop around to avoid getting taken advantage of? Whats the going rate for a trip from PDC to Akumal for two people with gear?

-Thanks

From Akumal, are you going to the Cancun Airport for your outbound flight?

When we fly into Cancun, for our trips to Puerto Aventuras, we book a roundtrip, private van, through Cancun Valet. They meet us at the exit from the airport, with our name on a placard (my wife really likes that part), and then we are the only one's on a full-sized van to and from PA. It is very convenient, especially on the return trip to the airport. They pick us up at an appointed time, at our condo, as opposed to us having to find a taxi (and where you are staying in Akumal may be different), and hoping it has room for us, and our luggage (two full sets of dive gear, plus a suitcase).

You might check them for a quote on your travel needs.

We just did about the same thing last month. We just winged it, got off ferry, picked up all our gear and trekked up the hill. BY the time we got off the pier we had an air conditioned van for 3 to almost Tilum for 75 USD. Probably could have gotten a better price if we had tried. We just try to look like we knew what we were doing...
good luck. You should not have any problems.

The area right by the ferry landing, IIRC, is a pedestrian zone, so you have to schlep your luggage a little ways to where the taxis wait. Then you will have a lot of options.

She and her father run a small livery service. Very nice people, newer passanger vans, and just nice to do business with. Drop her an email and see what she can do for you.
She'll be glad to meet you at the Ferry I'm sure.
