Going soon to a 5day/4night short liveaboard trip to Similan, was wondering what is customary tip for the crew, and whether it is better for the crew to receive in US$ or Thai Baht bills?

Agree...THB 300 a day is fine (either to your guide or the ship, if it's a shared tipping pool). Local currency is preferred. If there's a box for the chefs, throw in 100-200 baht for the trip.

Typically, on Thai-oriented liveaboard, there will be 2 separated tipping.
- One pool tip for all crews - cooks, serving/roomboy, captain, engineer/dinghy, etc. - I'd typically put about 1000-1500 THB per guest in this for a 4d3n trip.
- Tip for your group leader - each group will pool their tip for their respective leader. Typically 1000-1500 per guest for same duration.
Moreover, if any crew made a special impression on any guest, a specific handover directly to the person, says 300-500 THB, would be appreciated.

Not sure if it would be different on Foreigner-oriented liveaboard.

Thai Baht would be more appreciated as they don't have to make an exchange. (They don't usually have time for that.)

My way.
On day boat it is B100.00 for the crew and B200.00 for the group guide(2 dives).
I have not done any LoB in Thailand for very long time but suggesting B300.00 per day is a joke. B500.00 would be more appropriated.
Tipping one of the crew other than the guide should be done discreetly.
Sky the limit, it is entirely up to you.
