I am traveling to Playa del Carmen, and I was wondering what are the guidelines for tipping a divemaster?

In Playa or Coz, people generally tip DM's as if they were diving in the US. (I guess as the majority of dive tourists do come from the US.) - e.g. some people use a % of cost, some use an amount per tank - personally I generally do $5 per tank unless i get crappy service.

I second the 5 bucks a tank unless the service is poor or the boat is jam packed

Here is a question I've had for a long time. It appears that customarily dive masters are tipped pretty much all over the world. I know of a dive operation where they collect tips for the (Mexican) boat crew, but never for the (American) divemasters. The divemasters work for free and don't get tips. Is this common?

I always tip the DM's if it was a good trip. If a staff member went above and beyond I tip them personally. I tip $10 per tank for a good trip.
