My son- who surfs more than dives- has a persistent case of tinea. Has anyone found a particular wetsuit that can help keep that fungus from returning (beyond routine cleaning)??

Which type of tinea are you talking about? Corporis or versicolor?

I agree, if it is athlete foot and jock itch, that's a different story. Recurrences frequently occur with toe nail fungus.

However, tinea versicolor, which is more commonly on the chest, upper back, and neck, is more of an annoying yeast infection/colonization that needs good counseling on how to control, rather than irradicate.

He has corporis (body plus hair). He's seeing a dermatologist but hasn't been satisfied that its going away. (Seems to reappear after sweating in a wetsuit- not surprising).
Any info appreciated!
Thanks, LTO

Still sounds a little confusing to me. Ringworm or tinea of the scalp is unusual in adult. I am really wondering if your son has tinea versicolor which can affect the scalp and trunk, and not true tinea capitis or tinea corpora - true fungus of the scalp and body.

If it is true ringworm - the species on the scalp should be trichophyton tonsurans - and usually require an oral medication for 2 months.

If it is a ringworm species other than t. tonsurans, then you can do topical treatment. If the involvement is extensive, I usually do 1 week to 2 week of an oral antifungal treatment.

If he has it in the toe nail, then oral Lamisil for 3 months.

Thanks for the various answers- I've passed them along to my son. He's seeing a dermatologist but your (collective) excperiences are appreciated.
