Is there any trick to tightening this mounting ball on the NA-EM5 housing without damaging the ball or the housing? This is the one without the lanyard hole.

Doesn't it have flat sides? Put a spanner on it!

Not quite that simple. The bit with flat sides is a separate collar. Tightening it doesn't stop the post with the ball from loosening. I thought at first that there may be an allen key I could use in the the hole in the ball but that is not the case.

That's weird I just took mine off, it is indeed a separate collar. I never noticed before and just assumed it was one solid piece. Anyway, screw the shaft into the hole to the desired height then tighten the collar down with a spanner locking it in place.

Actually adding a SS washer under the collar as well as the supplied nylon washer made it a lot easier.
