Hey out there:
I was wondering if anyone out there has had a thyroid tumour? I just had one removed and I'm curious whether it will affected my diving or not. I have been having some anxiety bordering on panic while diving and wonder if it will go away. I'd like to hear from someone with first hand experience if possible. Thanks...BRANT

I seriously doubt having a thyroid tumor removed will cure your anxiety attacks under water. That's all up to you to control. It's in your mind not your thyroid in other words.

Good to hear you're doing OK after the surgery however.

Matt:
Thanks for the reply. I've done some reading about thyroid issues and would seem that panic and anxiety attacks go hand in hand with these conditions. I hope It's true even if just a bit.....BRANT

Brant: Your thyroid tumor would only affect your anxiety if it were a functional tumor. In other words, the tumor would have to be producing excess thyroid hormone, and you would have been hyperthyroid prior to your surgery. Most true tumors of the thyroid are non-functional. Your doctor would have tested your thyroid hormone level before (and probably after) your surgery. If your thyroid hormone levels (mainly what is called "free T4" and "TSH") are normal, then you are not hyperthyroid.

Doug:
Thanks for the info! My surgeon referred to the tumour as fiberous? I 'm not sure other than that. I'm still waiting for the pathology report. All biopsy results so far have been inconclusive. I will see the Doc on Friday to get my results. No mention so far about monitoring any levels. Can you think of any Questions I should ask......BRANT

Brant...You are totally correct...Hyperthyroidism can definitely cause these symptoms and I would think a tumor of any sort on the thyroid can affect release of TSH. I hope the removal of the tumor is a success and will take care of the problem. This would be a good topic to discuss with DAN after you discuss the results with your doc...I wish you the best...
