I am about to go diving with a friend. One problem. He has no thumbs. They were sliced off in a car accident during his youth.

What is the best way to communicate with him? For example, if I want to indicate go up, I use a thumbs up signal. Since he can't return it back how will he know to go up?

Just work out a signal that works for both of you. It can be anything as long as you both understand it and agree to it.

That sucks. I guess you will have to leave him down at the bottom. No thumb - no ascent. That's the basic rule of thumb when considering a thumbless ascent. Here's an idea: Make a copy of a recent movie review , laminate it in plastic and use that to communicate. That way, you can signal your ascent with two thumbs up!!

;)

Don't worry about it. I heard he was hitch-hiking to the dive site. He'll never get there. You wont have to dive with him.:)

Hmmm, I wonder what the DIR rules are with regard to diving without thumbs? I mean, you can't go hoseless, that's for sure, so thumbless would be out of the question for obvious reasons. On the other hand (no pun intended) if you had a 5-foot thumb, would that comply with DIR? Of course, the most fundamental problem remains: no redundancy here. The only way around that would be a pony thumb. But then, sling or sidemount?

yeah, exactly ...

agree that for him, thumbs up will be "pinky" up or "index finger" up

or ... as someone suggested ...

;)

He could take a picture of a thumb with him and point at it with his index finger.
