do I breakout the gear and start getting in shape? Is there any wetsuit that will allow a person to swim freestyle? My 3/2 wetsuit is fine for snorkleing but it doesn't allow enough range of motion for easy arm use while swimming.

There are wetsuits designed for surfing and windsurfing which have more flexibility (and less insulation) in the joints. You might be chilly swimming in one for a long period of time.

The windsurfing wetsuit I would use for 48 degree water is too thin to dive in for the same temperature water. The constant immersion would be uncomfortable, but it is ok for the occasional dunking I take off my board.

Can you get Body Glove wetsuits were you are? If so, get the "crush" 3/2 full suit. It has a different material under the arms and in the side panels. It is good for diving here occasionally, but it isn't made for deep depths..it compresses to much, and if you use it too much..it doesn't uncompress (is that a word??? ;) ). But, the flexiblility around the arms is just what you are looking for.
