My last morning of dives, in Cozumel, I had the day from Hell. That day, I was Murphy's "Special Friend."
On my way down the stone stairs of the Casa Del Mar to the dive shop, I slipped and fell down the stairs, bruising my lower back and scraping my right elbow pretty badly.
Then, instead of the nice big boats we'd had all week, I found out that we had one of the crappy little boats with no room.
Then, when I was setting my gear up, the O-ring blew on the tank.
Then, I was spastic and kept screwing up the belt-routing on my weights until a dive master took pity on my dumb azz and helped me out. Embarrassing...
Then, the hose joint on my computer started leaking badly.
After the first dive, I clipped my new $75 Cressi mask to my chest strap while I was still in the water, but because we were using the smaller boat, we had to remove our gear and hand it up, so I popped my gear off and handed it up, forgetting that I'd clipped my mask to the chest strap. We were over a wall at the time, so it's gone forever. One of the dive masters loaned me a mask, after I promised him that I wouldn't lose it.
(Even after all of these mishaps, I was still completely relaxed on the second dive. I nailed it -- no problem.)
By this point, my fellow divers that I'd traveled with, were just shaking their heads at my run of misfortune.
While getting off of the boat, my dry-bag came unbuckled from my boat bag and blew into the water, popped open, and the contents spilled out. I nearly lost my wallet that, at the time, had quite a lot of money in it. Fortunately, one of the other divers clambered down and grabbed it and my dry bag while they were still floating.
I spent the next half hour with the blow dryer in the room, drying all of my money.
Next time you have a rough day where the planets seem to align against you, take heart: You're not alone! :14:
