I'm a Fish!
I have been guiding whale shark trips for 7 seasons now and I have never seen so many as I did yesterday. We were at the departure pier at 7:30 in the rain. The rain turned into an all out thunder/lightning storm that lasted about an hour. After the storms passed the sky opened up and we were off. About 20 miles offshore we found a ton of them! Me and the captain guesstimated around 100+!!! At any given time you had 3-5 around you and probably about 10 or more around the boagt at any given time. You really didn't have to swim. Some were even just hanging vertically gulping the water and plankton. Also looked like a cleaning station for them as well. I used to take people over to Isla Holbox but after doing these trips out of Punta Sam, I will never go back to Holbox to see them...maybe just to visit, but you can not compare the clarity of the water around Isla Holbox with that out of Punta Sam. This was an insane trip!:D

Awesome vid! I went snorkeling with the whale sharks on July 4, 2010 from Punta Sam. I would have estimated at least 25-50 sharks on that trip, but not near as many as you encountered. I wish I could be there again, I could snorkel with them every day if I could :)

So cool! We will be in Cancun over Thanksgiving. Are they still there that time of year or have already moved on generally?

I think they are usually there between June and September. I think they will be gone by Thanksgiving :(

Grrr. Oh well, lots of other stuff. Though in all my years diving 2 big gets have eluded me the whale shark and the manta. I've been lucky to see most of the other big guns.

We went last week while staying on Isla Mujeres. Incredible experience! In addition to the whale sharks, we saw some rays in the water below the sharks. Not to mention at least one other "regular" shark swimming down below.
