I was going to let Ontario Diver recount this but I was bored and decided to take the bull by the horns.

A couple of weeks ago Matt and I were diving at the Marmora dam. When we exited the water an elderly gentleman approached us. Matt and this gentleman talked about diving for a while and then the man asked Matt if he had ever dove the train wreck that had gone off the tracks in the early 1900's. Both Matt and I started to pay closer attention. The man then told us that there was train that had gone off the tracks and it was in a lake over by Tweed! HELLO. So with that in mind we decided that it was time for a ROAD TRIP!!!

Last Sunday we made a right onto Stoco road and headed east. It was a nice day and we had all the dive gear in the truck. We drove past lots of fields and then past a big lake, Marlbank lake. Finally after a long drive we ended up in the in Marlbank, (I kept calling it Marlboro). Pretty little town that time forgot. Matt asked me if I wanted an ice cream and then he spotted the bar. Guess where we went. Anyway, to make a long story short, we found that it wasn't just a story. There were pictures of the engine on the wall, her name was Dinky. So back down the road we go. Back to the lake. After getting permission to go on the land, we walked past some amazing ruins of an old factory. There were stacks and the building itself was incredible. We had to weave our way through the brush and finally came to a path. I think it was once tracks. Down to the water we go where we find a round pool of water about maybe 15-20 feet wide. It had been put there by someone trying to keep the train in.

In this pool you could clearly see the stack of the train. She was covered in a white substance called Marl?? The only thing visible was the stack and that was just below the water line. Needless to say we didn't dive her. We didn't even go in the water but we had a wonderful adventure and who knows, maybe one of these days we will get a hint and follow it and come accross a new discovery. Now this is why I dive!!!!

Hope this wasn't too boring guys. Sorry Matt I couldn't wait. :10:

Nice story.. too bad it wasn't divable.

And we have some lines on other things as well. If nothing else we saw some great architecture and will be going back to get some pictures of it. There are so many things out there that haven't been discovered yet. Doesn't have to be deep, it just has to be an adventure. Keep your eyes open and your dive gear in the trunk at all times!!

Cool story!!
I, too, know of something in the water waiting to be discovered. A couple of years ago, I did a story for a local paper on diving in Muskoka. While researching it, I started to hear tales of a pair of warplanes in Lake Muskoka. The story varied between 1 and three planes, and the planes were either reputed to be Harvard trainers, or Tudor jet trainers.
While trying to confirm this, I actually came across an older diver who claimed to have been down and actually seen the planes. I was skeptical, until he gave me the exact location, and some other divers backed him up.
Sooooo.. guess what's on MY list of things to look for??? Maybe even this year. Problem is, you have to do it either spring or fall, since the locations is right in the middle of some very heavy boat traffic areas. But still.... intriguing....

Interesting story Marie.... There is so much to be discovered if we took the time to stop and smell the roses...

Hey if you discovered the TRAIN,,, call it M&M railway ...

Question regarding "gear in the trunk" ??? Is it safe to keep your tanks in the trunk on hot summer days. I have contemplated doing this but was worried they'd explode. I know they have over pressure releases. Do you ever have any concern about it ?

Al

Your tank will not explode. You may blow a burst disk if they are old and neglected, but even that would take an incredibly rare day and a very full tank.

Me, I don't even think twice. Worst your going to get is a 20-30 degree temp increase, which is only a couple 100 psi.

The tanks would have to hit 350 degrees before they would even start to fail when it comes to temperature. The back of the truck is usually pretty cool, so the answer would be No, I am not worried about them. Good question though Al.

I would also be available if need be. But it would be your dive and I would only be along to be a "look out" from the water of course.
