So this last weekend was the boy's open water weekend, take 2. (The first was prematurely ended when the waves were crashing on the stairs at breakwater in Monterey) The weekend was a blast. We did our dives early Saturday morning, then deep fried a turkey in the parking lot at breakwater. The boy ended up only doing one of his dives Saturday. He lost a weight pouch going out on the second dive, took a tumble in the surf and was kinda panicked crawling up the beach. He had done 3 dives on the previous weekend, so Saturday he got dive 4 done.

I figured I am here, so I'm gunna dive this afternoon with the boy or not. Hit the water about 3:30 Saturday afternoon, went out along the breakwater to 30' hit the bottom and then had a group of sea lions join us. Had about 15 in the water with 20' vis.

Got up early Sunday and helped the boy gear up for his last skills dive, watched him do his out of air drills with the instructor. Then it was my turn to be out of air, he switched to his secondary, donated me his primary and made us both neutral, and kicked us both to the surface. Not only that, but he did a fine job of holding my fat ***** out of the water while i oral inflated my BCD. Was quite proud of the boy.

After he finished a couple of other skills with the instructor, Kris the DM, my son and I did a little tour and back to shore. My son got to practice his lost reg skill an this dive, as i got my arm caught in his hose and ripped his reg out. (Honest it was my accident).

After lunch the boy and I went on our first dive together father and son, and dive buddies!

enjoy the next few years...looking back it was a very happy 10+/- years for me(had 3 that got certified @ 14,12 & 12 Y.O.).......btw, youngsters make GREAT dive buddies.......again, enjoy.......

Send your Boy congrats from the Fantasea Dive crew here in Mexico! And swimming with the sea lions...how cool is that?! That's something I still long to do someday. I remember when I got my PADI Junior Open Water with Mom and Dad back in '81. We have always lived on water so it was not uncommon for me and my Dad to be diving every afternoon off the pier or go out to the pass there at Cotton Bayou, Alabama or when we lived on a big freshwater lake further north. Even when we took a vaction, we still all went diving as a family. My parents enjoyed alot of good years diving with their two boys. But...as life would have it...we went off to college and that just about ended family vacations. :( but now, they certainly don't mind coming down here to visit me a couple times a year!:D

Well he is 12 now, I cant wait till he grows up and moves to mexico, etc. so I can come "visit" him, and maybe do a dive or two while down there.
