I am looking at taking a technical wreck diving course sometime next year. I would like it to be a realtively short drive from home and my two options seem to be the Gulf or the Great Lakes. I have taken the boat out of Freeport TX, to the Flower Gardens and it occured to me that being the one of the busiest shipping ports in the world there has to be something there to dive. So are there any diveable wrecks off of the Texas coast and are they a reasonable place to train.

I hate to say it but there are really no good wrecks off the Texas coast,,,,there are a few but are not a big deal. Your best bet is to head north to the Lakes were you can wreck dive/train 7 days a week! I will be up at Duluth this summer/06' for a few weeks doing just the same thing.

PS--- I was born in the great city of Tulsa! How is Randy Piper,,,I have visited with him via e-mail a few times.

Call American Diving on South Padre Island, (956) 761-2030,(http://www.divesouthpadre.com/) and take a look at their website for more info.

They will be sinking the Texas Cliper...the old steamer training boat for Texas A & M some time, soon somewhere not to far from Freeport. Other than that...American Diving as a trip out to shrip boat.

I wasn't aware the location of the sinking had changed. Last I knew it was going to be out of McAllen, or way down South.

Unless things have changed in the last two weeks the Aggie Clippers is still going to be sunk down south. I would not complain if they sunk it off of Freeport but I don't think that is going to happen.

The only wreck I know to dive out of Freeport right now is the VA Fogg.

Thanks for the info. South Padre might be just what I am looking for. I checked the mileage and its about 200 miles closer to me than Thunder Bay Michigan, which was my other choice.

There are sevral wrecks out of the Freeport Galveston area that are suitable for wreck training. other than the Fogg and Liberty ships thr oil field has left us a few dive sights. Ranging from small crewboats thru supply boats (200 ft long) up to a turned over drilling rig. most are on the charts (i use Hiltons) but you may have to do search patterns when you get to them. For training some of the gulf shrmpers that have sunk (70-90 ft long) are also ok. Please remember that the wrecks I'm talking about havn't been sanitised for diving and contain multiple hazards for a penatration dive.
