What is tech diving? I know there are classes out there to become certified, i.e. cave diving, deep diving, etc. I am not sure what people are talking about when they say tech diving. Can someone explain please? :mooner:

I am sure you will probably get an infinite amount of responses to that question. I, normally, classify tech diving as any type of overhead diving. By overhead, I mean:

1. Physical: You cannot make a direct ascent to the surface because of some tangible barrier.
2. Virtual (EDIT: visual is too vague): You have decompression obligations that make a direct ascent to the surface significantly more dangerous.

Additionally, more complex equipment, ie rebreathers, are in the realm of tech. You will hear most people discussing 'tech' as any form of diving that requires more extensive planning, training, and experience than recreational diving.

People that go beyond recreational limits without training, planning, and experience, are not doing tech dives nor are they tech divers. They are stupid.

Thanks, Zaber --

I've also 'heard' that any kind of planned decompression, with deco gas, is tec. What's your opinion?

Decompression implies a virtual ((EDIT: visual is too vague)) overhead, a deco obligation. So long as its planned and the diver is trained, or in training, I would say it is most definitely tech.

Zaberman, I would change your word "visual" to Virtual. a virtual overhead includes a decompression obligation. Jax, I think that answers your question.

^ agreed. Visual is too vague, I often use them interchangeably in context

Thanks! (I'm out of thanks clicks.) :)
