I was just wondering if taxes were suppose to be charged on dive classes? This one particular dive shop in Tampa has charged me taxes on all my classes. This past weekend I took a class up in Hudson and they said taxes should not be charged on classes because it is a service. Can anyone tell me what's wrong or right?

Were you taxed for the service portion of the class or just the materials (books and videos)? If they advertise the class with "Materials Included". They may charge you tax on the value of the materials.

I was charged for the whole class.

There was a time when taxes were not charged on services, but that was changed 20+ years ago. Taxes are charged on services. Taxes are not charged on most foods (unprepared) and on medicine. Taxes are charged on almost everything else, including services. State tax is 6%, but some counties/cities have added additional taxes. It sounds like you were charged correctly.

So how can a one dive shop charge taxes and the other one not.

He who charges not is either including it in the price and just charging a net amount*, or is risking running afoul of the state Department of Revenue if/when they come a'callin'.

*Technically, they would be reporting as if they are paying it themselves, though it really is being charged and passed through.

$150 without tax is the same at $141.50 plus 6%. The state doesn't care about the semantics as long as sales are reported and taxes paid on the revenue.

Assuming of course the particular store is indeed paying sales tax....
