here is a pic of a tank I bout . you can see the to rust spots. I took it to the LDS and a guy there did a visual and said it looked fine and was gonna send it out for hydro and call me when it was done. I never heard back so i thought i'd give them a call today. The owner said remember I told you that only 2 outta 25 tanks that I've done recently have passed visual. He was refering to people buying tanks else where and bring there for vis and hydro. so anyways he said the tank was no good because the tank had a slight coat of rust inside and 2 spots on the bottom and along with the rust on the side that looked to him to be pitted he was thinks the tank is bad. He did say he could tumble it but it could take 2 times and then its still not guareenteed to pass hydro. I can say the few rust spots I seen on the outside didn't look pitted . I asked him about alittle elbow grease on my part and he said it wouldn't be worth it, in his opinion. I thought i read somewhere on here about a slight rust coat on the inside. should I just resell this for a paint ball tank? its a 72 cft steel. thanks

Take it to another dive shop and get a 2nd opnion. It sounds like this guy just wants to sell tanks.

Take it to a hydro facility youself. Around here they only charge $25 if you bring it in. You also can tumble the inside yourself. Four plastic casters on a wood plank, an electric motor or a belt hooked to your bicycle and about 10 pounds of ceramic chips will do the trick. Don't forget that your pal at the LDS makes a living selling new tanks.

but doesn't he have to say the visual is good before the hydro shop will touch it?

Nope. Visual inspections aren't any form of legal requirement. Only the hydro is.

Gottcha, thanks . I sorta get the feeling he wouldn't fill it if I have it hydro'ed. He said he wasn't worried about it blowing up on me .. he was worried it'd blow up when he filled it. Really I don't think it's pitted.. it does have a few rust spots that I was willing to fix myself, but if he won't fill it ...arrgghh.

If it passes Hydro and he will not fill it.
Let everyone know about it and find a new LDS.

PS: Alot of Fire Depts. can do fills,
as well as anyplace that can Hydro can usually Fill.

A visual inspection and a hydro test are both legally required parts of the requalification process and the hydro test facility performs it.

Thanks guys .. I'm going to look for a hydro facility and take it there directly
