Canon claims

"The EOS 550D is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX series Speedlite flash units..."

The only incompatibilities you are likely to find are older third-party lenses, such as those from Sigma or Tamron.

Which older eos lenses? Sigma, Tokina and Tamron probably will need to be re-chipped. Most older canon lenses will work, but I have an old 50 macro that refuses to work on any EF-s body, but it works fine on a 5DMII. Weird.

How old is your "old" 50 macro? I've got a 7 year old Canon EF 50mm macro that works fine on all my EF-S (crop) bodies (30D, 50D, T2i). My assumption was that all EF and EF-S lenses should work fine (and they have in my experience).

That was my assumption as well, but the EF50 would set itself wide open and not focus at any other fstop. Very strange, Canon will fix it but for $130 so I got the 60 instead.

I've found a few times that strange aperture behavior on EF lenses indicates a poor electrical connection. I've been fortunate that once I was able to fix that type of problem by cleaning the contacts. Easy to test, but not a guarantee of any improvement.
