I have been searching for a small reel that I saw and I think it was called a "sweet pea". I want it to put 50 ft of cave line on for a safety sausage which I like to deploy on the safety stop due to boat traffic on drifts, etc. Has anyone heard of this OR know of another small, not cumbersome type of reel? I have a Halcyon eclipse and not a lot of room for extras and I have my hands full with my camera. Gracias.

Catherine,

Ordinarily I don't recommend Dive Rite reels - while many like them for overhead applications I've seen too many of them seize up during cave classes and IMO there are better alternatives for use in overheads.

But for shooting liftbags and SMBs, Dive Rite's #4250 might be just the ticket.

Find it here:

That's about as small a reel as you're likely to find.

You might also want to consider a finger spool for that application, however, given your occupation I suspect you've already had some experience with them that causes you to prefer a reel. The Dive Rite would certainly work well for what you're looking for. Hope this helps.

Thanks to you both, I looked at those and plan to order one of each. I 'll give the other to my buddy. I had looked at LP but had not seen those small ones. Great!

If you are considering using a finger spool...which, works much better for this application than a reel... then you might want to consider purchasing from one of our local boys. They make great products at killer prices.

For instance...take a look at the spools that Tobin offers:

8 bucks for a bare spool. 20 for the same with 75' of #24 cave line and a 4" SS double ender. Hard to beat that.

Or...for perhaps the world's smallest spool...

Check out that little dude...only holds 20 to 30 feet of line...but for shooting a DSMB from a "safety stop" it just might work.

Good idea. I'm in the process of looking to make an up line from a wreck dive if needed.
