I'm a Fish!
I was at the shop the other day taking a look at some computers. I'm really interested in the suunto mosquito. mainly because it's nice and compact. and it has quite a bit of features, like using it as free dive computer. I don't really care if it's "difficult" to use or anything. other than that anyone have any experience with it? or have heard anything about it?

oh yeah, another reason for the interest is that I know suunto seems to always have high quality stuff.

If you're looking at a wrist computer, is "nice and compact" coming at the expense of "easy to read"? These larger form-factor computers are still worth considering.

I personally have one that I use for a back-up dive computer and I like it. Because it is a watch, I always have it on me (in case I forget my reg with the Cobra attached and have to borrow a reg) and it is a convienent depth gauge on my wrist. I wind up looking at it more than my Cobra which I have my compass attached to and I use for an air gauge.

I am already risking taking some heat from the Computers Will Rot Your Brain crowd for admitting that I use a back-up computer but our store owner (who is a Platinum Pro 5000 diver and an Instructor Certifier with a two digit card number) uses the same tactic as well. I consider myself in good company.:)

i own a stinger which is basically a mosquito plus gauge mode. really like it. however, be aware that they are very conservative. i sometimes have to go into deco when my buddy still has plenty of time left. i prefer to err on the side of caution, though.

I was going to buy a mosquito but ended up buying the stinger instead. I talked to a few people who said they have a lot of problems. One shop owner said that for every 10 he sells, 7 of them have to be sent back. I didn't buy from him so it wasn't that he was enticing me to get hte more expensive computer. I don't know if anyone else has heard these kinds of rumours.

That number sounds a little high, but I will say that I am on my second one and one of the instructors at the shop had issues with his depth indicator sticking on it as well. Keep in mind that our LDS sells alot of these so over the last couple of years two out of the high number that he has sold is a pretty good percentage. Thankfully, it happened to some who does DiveCon work and an instructor. Both of us dive back-up computers to prevent our dive day during classes or vacations from being done due to computer failure.

DISCLAIMER: I use the Cobra and love it.

One of my dive buddies has a Suunto wrist computer. I'm not sure if it's the Mosquito or the Stinger. His depth gauge got stuck. On the Uwatec lawsuit thread there are 2 posts about Suunto wrist computers having problems with the depth gauges getting stuck.

I'm not sure on how to use the quote option so you'll have to wade through the thread. Here's a link to a picture one of them took of his Stinger in the parking lot.

I use a Mosquito, and I'm happy with it.

Still, I have two remarks: first, the ascent rate alarm can't be heard if your wear a hood.

Secondly, if I wear my 7mms Henderson Hyperstretch the strap will be too small, and if I put the extension it will be too big, so I need to put it on one of my BCD's rings.

My son dives with a Mosquito. We were in Cozumel last month and on the first dive his depth read 50 deeper than we were at the bottom. On the surface it continued to read a depth of 50 feet. It stayed there until I removed the battery to reset it. It had no problem thereafter. We were diving with Living Underwater and the DM always carries a spare computer for this possibility. He gave his spare for my son to dive for the rest of the week.
