suunto vyper novo goes to sleep mode after being idle fo 30 min to conserve battery. Does D4i act the same way?

No, it is a watch size dive computer: it is meant to be worn 24 hours a day. If you want save battery, e.g. avoiding to go in dive mode if the computer gets wet, you can disable it.

Just picked up a D5 and it doesn't go to sleep unless inactive for several hours.
