So I need about 10 lbs per side or 20 total so at the dive shop some say hard belt weights and some say soft weights. What say you? Thanks

Using hard or soft weights doesn't matter at all once it's in the pockets. Both shops probably advised you to buy whatever they had and/or could sell at the highest price.

BTW, 10lbs is a lot of weight for an integrated weightpocket. I don't trust those things at all having seen WAY too many problems with weightpockets of all types falling out because of being overloaded.

I know what you're going to say but frankly, the specs for maximum loading should be cut in 1/2 for safety.

My advice to you would be to do what most experienced divers do. Put 1/2 of your weight in the vest (10lbs = 5lbs per side) and 1/2 of it on a weightbelt.

R..

I hear what you said. It would be very bad to drop to much weight really fast.

You could dump only one pocket in that situation.
The experienced bit comes from not having to manhandle a completely heavy lump.
These days some idea of better ability to trim.

but more importantly

If you happen to separate yourself from your gear, wearing a belt is an invaluable aid in conducting gearless activities or controlling your ascent

Hard or soft lead shouldn't make much of a difference. Also a wee warning so far this year 3 of the guys i dive with who have the apex sure lock system have had their weights fall out. Lots of other guys (myself included) are diving with integrated weights without any problems but the apex system seems to be, from experience, a bit flimsy particuly when its filled to maximum capacity.

I wouldn't put that much weight into an integrated system, but would distribute the load across the integrated system and a belt. For several reasons:

- Strain on the integrated system may cause failure (not saying it will, just saying more weight means more strain

- If I need that much weight to keep me down, I would be worried about loosing it all at once, as it would create a VERY uncontrolled ascent

- Trim will be poor, much better to distribute it more evenly over the body

- Using the weight to your advantage: even in the event where you need to dump your weights, you will have a more gradual ascent, as you can dump either one pocket, both pocket, the entire BCD, or the entire BCD and the weight belt.

I use 10# hard weights in each SL pocket when I'm diving dry and not in my BP/W. Never had any issues. Lost a pocket while entering the water once, but that was in Oman, carrying only 5#. Probably because the SL wasn't properly engaged = pilot error.

I wouldn't worry a bit.
