I know this is an old thread but I wanted to post about a negative experience I had with Reef Pirates. The captain (Dan) was great, and the dive sites were beautiful but both guides were very disrespectful to wildlife (trying to force an octopus out of its hole, grabbing on the reef, removing other animals from their homes etc.). It was not an isolated incidence as another friend dived with them a couple of days later and experienced the same. Definitely give this shop a miss.

This has been pretty common practice off Oahu for a long time. I have complained about it previously, deaf ears. I would patronize shops with respect for the marine life flora and fauna.

Grabbing onto the reef is one thing but usually I see it from vacation divers, though getting an octopus out of its hole mostly I see as a non issue

Last time this was talked about by the people it bothered they were also talking about how they enjoyed a baby pig dish in Mexico.

Snorkeling off Maui, I encountered a group of free divers, one with a speargun and three or four octopi attached to his belt. If hunting octopi is an accepted part of underwater sport, then removing and replacing octopi can't be that bad. The local restaurants boast of fish and octopus gathered the very same day that it is on the menu.
