Can someone tell me the location of the submarine tower at catalina island? I read about it in Sport Diver Magazine. Apparently it is in 180-200 fsw. It was a structure from which submariners practiced emergency escapes. Any info on the location would be appreciated. My wife and I are just getting into deep wreck diving and are always looking for a site in which to practice. Thanks in advance.

It is a couple hundred yards off the NE corner of Blue Caverns Reserve. There's not much left to see now. The iron structure is laying flat with the only relief being the concrete bases. There aren't even many fish left. I would recommend Ship Rock instead for deep training. There are many crescent shaped rocks beginning in 180 feet and continue down the slope. You can make ascents along the North side of Ship Rock. There is a nice vertical wall on the NE corner. It's always nice to be able to make deco stops along the wall and into the kelp rather than in open water. You can even anchor in shallow water and still dive to any depth you want.

Thanks for the info. I have dove the sea side of bird rock, but it is a tough ancorage. I will try ship rock, but i may look for the sub towers as well. NE of the caverns seems like it would put us right out in the boat traffic coming into two harbours. is that right? thanks again....
