I have recently posted several messages on the board as a evaluate housings for my DSLR - thanks for all your responses.

Pretty much across the board the response is the Nikon 60mm 2.8 G and Tokina 10-17 fisheye. Of course I have neither of these lenses, close but none of these (I do have the Nikon 50mm 1.4 and Tokina 11-16).

A question on using the Tokina 10-17mm with such a wide field of vision do I need 2 strobes, one on each side? Or is one strobe sufficient? I primarily use an Inon Z240 but do have a Sea&Sea YS-90auto that I haven't used in a while.

Thanks

I would recommend using two strobes in most situations.

Also, the 60mm most people use is a macro lens, but it seems like you're referring to a non-macro 50mm prime, which isn't very close, since can't focus closer than 1.5 feet or so.

I use two DS125's on long arms when using my 10-17mm. It takes a little playing around with strobe positioning.

If you already have the Tokina 11-16 I would play with that first before buy the 10-17mm and get the 60mm instead.

Regards Mark

Yeah, the 50/1.4 is nothing like the 60mm for UW work.
As Aussie said playing around with the 11-66mm might help.
When you move to the 10-17mm, remember to pull them back (until your shoulders hurt).
2 strobes are a must for both lens, I use two YS110's.

Hi Marcelo, i want to buy an Ikelite housing for my D90 and I'm thinking about lenses. Do you think Tokina 10-17 and Nikkor 60mm are good to start?

Vjey,

I think the Tokina 10-17mm and the Nikkor 60mm Macro are excellent first lens choice. These two lenses I would use 95% of the time.

I prefer the old Nikkor AF-D 60mm Macro (Mirco) as its cheaper, you can add Teleconverters like the kenko for super macro. Its a faction of a second slower at auto focus but its still super fast.

I recommend that you get the Ikelite 8 inch dome for the 10-17mm also. The wide view @ 10mm needs a nice big dome around it.

Have you though of other brands such as Aquatica? Little more expensive but better build quality and better port locking system than Ikelite.

Regards Mark

Very good starting lineup.

thanks Aussie,

i researched on other housings, but the prices differences for housings, domes, ports are very large, and I have to import everything because I'm from Brazil. Ikelite is the best choice for me.
