I have been using a SeaLife 1200 Elite but would like to upgrade to the Canon G15 with Fantasea FG15 housing. I like the video light and would keep it with this set-up but I need strobe ideas.

Do you have the fantasea yet? If not also take a look at the ikelite housing, it'll allow you to run wired strobes and not have to worry about the strobe in camera sucking your battery dry. In addition you can use the modeling lights in the strobe which will shut off when the camera fires to help focus, and see.

If you have the Fantasea housing already then I'm sure others can help, just offering another viewpoint.

i have the g15, fantasea fg15 case and inon z240 strobes using fiber optic cables and a solar 1200 focus light. Ether the z240 or the d2000 is a great choice for the g15. I am on the other side of rks view of the connection. The fiber optic is less prone to floods and I can do more than 2 full dives on the g15 battery before it needs to change.

I have used 2 different strobes. I have used the Ikelite DS 51. It uses rechargeable AA batteries and recharging is a bit of a pain. Also, the screw socket on the battery compartment can wear over time. The strobe has only a 90 degree cone which makes backscatter easier to control. The strobes are light and reasonably compact.

I have also used the Ikelite DS 125 and 160 strobes. They are quite powerful. They have their own battery packs which connect very well, charge well and shoot a bunch of shots. The wide cone of the strobes is great for wide angle shots but it can be a bit tricky for controlling backscatter.

The strobes are large and heavy. So there are trade offs for both.

ScubMar I understand your point of view, but I always wonder can it really leak through the strobe connection? I understand water could get into the connectors but I doubt that it would actually go through the connector into the housing. It's another possible leak point for sure, but I'm careful about my O-rings, all of them, and take my time assembling the night before. For me the payoff is doing three dives in a day without ever having to open the housing or worry about battery life, so it's basically where you want to trade off.

I use the Ikelite DS160 strobes and while they're heavier out of the water they produce a great amount of light, I've used them on night dives, and the DS161 is an excellent choice if you want to do video as well. Don't know how they work with fiber but I understand they do.

I'd recommend either the Sea & Sea YS-01 or YS-D1 strobes. You would need a tray and arms for it. Really any of our lighting packages can work for you, if you already have a video light we can back that out of the package and give your the appropriate mount. Here's our Value System Packages with the Fantasea Housing, or you can build it a la carte.
