This summer the warmer temps have brought us new visitors to our area to check out.Some. We have had in our local area of San Diego : tuna crab, sea turtles and now Hammer head sharks! For us this is pretty exciting and its really nice to get these unexpected visits to our area. Here is a short clip of our latest visitor.

Have you had any new visitors come by for a spell in your area. Aside from the little red tuna crab and my in laws From Wisconsin :shakehead:, I did not get a chance to see any other new visitors (sea turtle and Hammer Head) this summer, but I am still out there trying to get a glimpse!

Was that a recent picture of an attack? I guess this morning I just heard the news of a Hammer Head that bit a kayaker's foot. Undoubtedly not very wise, as he was fishing while dangling his foot off the kayak!

yeah it was recent.. Enjoy the new visitors!

I thought these sharks were not aggressive, are they always this aggressive? Has anyone had an encounter with HH sharks before?
The larger hammerheads (Great, Smooth, and Scalloped) are considered quite dangerous, collectively among the top five most dangerous sharks in existence.

:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3: Anyone ever?? I've seen them maybe a few dozen times. They tend to be shy, but it is my impression that once they turn on, you can have a very serious problem. In fact, the only shark I ever really needed to shoot with a speargun (and had the opportunity to do so) was a HH.

I know many people who have been bitten by sharks. Don't believe all the warm and fuzzy crap you read on SB (from people who live in Nebraska or Iowa - and who dive 6 times a year from a boat with 12 other people all blowing bubbles at the same time).

As said above, it has been my understanding that hammerhead are a very dangerous shark, however, it's been my experience that they are shy.

It's my intention to treat them as dangerous but until I'm feeling the danger, shan't do anything to scare them away.

having dived with scallop hammerheads only twice i would say they are very shy. what has been told me to about oceanic sharks, is that they are very chilled until there is a chance of food. hence why you hear oceanic white tips attacking people in egypt, generally there is food in the water and they will chase off anything in the area.

could be same with the person fishing off a kayak?

I mentioned in a thread I started 2 weeks ago about our 68F water temp. here being unheard of. It blew my mind to see a few Trigger Fish in Nova Scotia. My next dive was in my shorty at 64F. Then again the next week in 56F (offshore wind)-- not a wise choice with only 67F air temp. that day.
