Protect Cocos Island

membersproject.com/project/view/WXKZ1S

This project sounds perfectly planned and will provide a much needed link between the people of Costa Rica and their most precious natural resource. The advanced thinking that has gone into the project and the value of the dollar will ensure that the Members Project grant would go a long way in Costa Rica.

It's well documented that shark populations are in dire need of protection. 90% of large fish species have already been eliminated from the ocean. It's critical to protect the last 10% and Cocos Island has such a rich ecosystem that it is a critical shark habitat. Recent scientific studies report that the heathiest reef ecosystems will be inhabited by an abundance of top predators, primarily sharks.

"The illegal poaching of sharks from Cocos will have significant effects on the health and productivity of the entire marine food chain. Such ramifications will be immediately felt by humans so I'd like to reiterate that this is very much as much of a "human interest" issue as it is "environmental."

The harvesting of sharks is such a critical and present issue and is receiving so much attention, that no educated person could imply otherwise. I work in the field of conservation and I can say firsthand that divers are the very best advocates for the ocean. Every diver I know follows the rule of "touch nothing and leave no trace," and the experienced diving population has watched as sites around the world have suffered as a result of unregulated fishing.

It's time to bridge the gap between "environmental" and "human" issues and this project sounds like the best way to do it. We have only one earth and one ocean and it's in the best interest of humankind to protect and manage it sustainably."
