So last time I went diving, I got out of the car, put on my gear, noticed I dropped my knife, went back, and it was gone. I asked all of the divers around me...nobody saw it (yeah right). Oh and there is only about 15 yards between my car and the water when this happened. THe knife was brand new and I just got it for my birthday!!! So my question is "Why would someone steal my birthday knife?" and If you know who did it, please post an apology. Thanks.

(I sure would be impressed with Oceanic if they sent me a courtesy replacement one:116: )

The same thing happened to me except it was a roll of $50 bills, and I was walking from the bank to my car. $5,000 just gone like that and no one saw anything (yeah, right!).

(I sure would be impressed with the U.S. Treasury Department if they sent me a courtesy replacement of $50 bills)

Now do you honestly think somebody stole your knife or is it possible that you dropped it and someone just picked it up? Granted Finders Keepers is not the right thing to do but that isn’t theft.

It may also have been someone totally unrelated to the divers who you contacted. Did it fall under something in your vehicle or even under the vehicle itself?

Losing something is usually a pain in the butt and it gets worse when it is something on the order of a Birthday Gift. BUT, if they didn’t take it from your control and just picked up a dropped item I wouldn’t consider it a theft.

Sorry for your loss but relax a bit and next time be a bit more vigilant with your gear. ;)

I steal things all of the time. I stole someone's car keys when they dropped them in a local river, I stole a single twin jet fin that another person dropped in the same river. I stole a one pound weight from some unfortunate diver in a local spring, and a month later helped my buddy steal a liftbag also left by some unfortunate diver in the same exact spring, 60 feet from where the weight was.

:)

Of course, I do usually ask if anyone around there had lost it. I'm still trying to find the owner of the car keys.... and if I found something on the ground by a car at a dive site, I wouldn't touch it. That said, if it was a little ways from the car, I might. I would ask people if they knew whose it was, and if no one said itw as there, Id keep it. However, if I had a friend with a similar object, I would probably assume my friend dropped it and take it without asking. A day or two later I'd return my friend's lost item, only to find out it wasn't his....then I wouldnt know what to do. So, my advice is to put up a sign at the dive place asking if anyone has seen it, to return it.

Yeah I get it but there is no way that somebody picked it up and didn't know that I dropped it. I mean, the time between me dropping it and coming back to look for it would have been like 2 minutes tops. During that time though, my buddies were still in the area. Arrgh! Just so aggravating!!!

sorry about your loss but at least is was a cheap item. someone could have taken your regs or a scooter or something of real material value. Open the wallet and go get a new one, they are only about $40.

Just act as if nothing has happened. If it was one of your buddies, hopefully not, it may just show up in a few months when they think the heat is off of they forget where they got it.

Just because your buddies were in the area doesn’t mean they saw anything. They may have been focused on other things and just not paying attention.

Two minutes can be a very long time. So just relax and be an open minded, open eyed detective. :eyebrow:

My "buddies" who work for the TSA at Columbus International "found" a nice diver's knife in my check-in luggage a few months ago. I guess they decided that I didn't need it anymore. Bought a pair of EMT scissors to take it's place. No one has found it yet.

garrobo,
we must have the same "buddies".
while flying from balt. md. to st.lucia last may, they decided to liberate mine.

I have an extra one if you want it. Just name your price. Let me find it though first.
