EcoWeek Costa Rica will be host to the State of the Oceans Summit (SOS) in San Jose, on August 12th to the 14th. SOS will feature presentations from both the international and national marine environmental industry with subjects ranging from sharks to ocean plastics pollution.

“SOS is an opportunity to bring together the world’s leading organizations and experts in the field of marine preservation” according to Richard Stewart, SOS Producer and Executive Director of the presenting Ocean Realm Society.

Among the scheduled presentation key note speakers - Jupp Borg, President of the Shark Research Institute, presenting “Sharks Indisputable Role in Nature;” Randall Aurraz, President, PRETOMA presenting the “State of Costa Rica’s Marine Environment and “Ronald Sanabria, VP Sustainable Tourism, Rainforest Alliance presenting the “Relationship of Sustainable Ecotourism and the Economy.”

The SOS luncheon will feature a film presentation by one time Cousteau film team member and Algalita Foundation cinematographer, Bill McDonald, with his ocean plastics film “Synthetic’s Sea” depicting Algalita’s Captain Moore’s Pacific Ocean plastics research.

The afternoon session will engage the speakers and participants in a panel discussions entitle: “The challenge of integration of economy and ecology, while addressing the role and responsibility of implementing environmental solutions.”

The State of the Oceans Summit is open to all individuals and organizations with an interest in the global and Costa Rican marine environment.
