First post here and I'm ridiculously excited to begin my OW Certifiction course next week. I've always loved swimming in the ocean so this seemed like the next logical step. My wife is active duty military currently stationed in Japan and since she just got her certification last month, it made sense for me to finally do it so that we'll be able to go together on future vacations/weekends.

Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself and look forward to reading/learning more and more on these forums.

Also, I've already purchased my gear and will begin using it following my certification. I'm fortunate in that I make a pretty good income so price vs. changing my mind isn't really an issue for me. I'd appreciate thoughts on what I've gone with but I realize that over time and with gained experience, I may find I don't like what I have and want to change. Like I said, no big deal...you live and you learn.

Mask - Sherwood Rona (I liked the visibility when I tried it on)
Snorkel - Aqua Lung Impulse 3
Fins - Aqua Lung Express Adjustable
Regulator - Scuba Pro MK 25/A 700
Octo - Sub Gear SG-100
BCD - Aqua Lung Axiom I3

Welcome to ScubaBoard, SB for short. You will learn a lot here, lots of professionals to answer your questions. You will also meet others in your area that you can be a dive buddy with.

I would just note that newly minted divers don't necessarily make good dive partners, married or not... You would be best served to take an a experienced diver with you or stick around the dive master if your planning a dive trip, till you hone your skills together. Practice, Practice, Practice, out of air scenarios and know each others gear well!

Yes, my buddy was a newbie as well and of course neither of us had rescue skills. Thinking back now, that seems a little scary, but that's just me. Being an "ocean" swimmer is definately a big plus. I am amazed that some start scuba and are totally unfamiliar with the ocean but that is where their checkout dives may be.

Where in Japan is she?

Welcome aboard! I got introduced to my new addiction when we were in Okinawa, and have never looked back. My wife used to tell me I spent more time at the dive shop than I did at home, and then she used to get mad that I was gone very weekend assisting with the dive classes. My neighbor was a DM and now is an instructor still there in Oki.
