Hi TerryTat
I dove St Kitts about 10 years ago - it was not bad, but certainly not on a par with Caymans or Coz. It's an interesting top side island - nice beaches (again not the best in the Carribean), a volcano to climb, interesting colonial fort ruins etc. When I went, the rates for most accomodations and diving were reasonable. It could be a good choice depending on what you're looking for.

What are your priorities? Diving? Beach? Hiking? Shopping? Give us more input on what you're looking for and I'm sure you'll get great feedback from this board.

HI,, thanks for responding.... My girlfriend is thinking about opening a B&B there. So I was wondering how life was underwater. I know it has a lot of advantegous topside. Duty free.. moderate climate... etc.... One good thing is it's close to a lot of other world class dive destinations....

There are a couple of dive operators. Pro-Divers is the only one I know by name, having used them. Many of the dive sites are actually closer to Nevis than St Kitts I think, but I could be wrong.

I've dove two sites here - Monkey Bar and The Turtles. Both moderately shallow (40-60' - have to dig out my log) with some nice reef canyon formations and swimthroughs. This was June 2004.

St. Kitts is pretty small and I don't believe gets many of the bigger cruise ships. Windjammer stops there though (which is how I ended up diving it). Marriott just opened a big-arse resort/casino here which I'd heard was paying out big-time to try and attract a following. There just weren't enough flights into the island to fill it up. So a small B&B is probably a better choice. Ironically enough I know two couples who went to St. Kitts to get married, too, one from Texas and the other from Colorado. Small world...

I dove from the Nevis side. Both islands are very close. As previously said, the diving is okay, but not spectacular. That said, I would certainly not turn it down if I went back.

Your girlfriend will be living the life that many of us dream about.... I hope it works out well for her/ you.

A lot has changed in St Kitts in the last 10 years. The Tourism is definitly on the grow. St kitts has One of only 2 ports in the Caribbean that the worlds largest cruiseship (QM2) can actually dock. The majority of the dive sites are within a 5 minute boat ride from our privite harbor at Bird Rock Beach. Check out our website at www.Divestkitts.com You will also find some great links to the ministry of Tourism. We have sites for all levels of Divers as well as sites that are prestine (look towards future articles written in Advanced diver Magazine) The Island is less crowded with excellent ecotourism.
Best of luck with your B&B
