Officials say a man has died in Spring Meadow Lake while scuba diving.
Gerald Roeller, 53, of Helena, died from a yet to be determined cause, according to Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson.
“There is no real obvious explanation to why he died,” Nelson said. An autopsy will be performed today and the scuba gear will be assessed.
Roeller was last seen in the water at about 1 p.m. Saturday. A crew of volunteers with Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue recovered his body just before 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said the death remains under investigation.
A park attendant saw the man go into the water at about 1 p.m. Saturday and then grew concerned when the man’s gear was still at the shoreline hours later, Dutton said.
Authorities were called in Saturday night and continued to search again Sunday morning.
Crews of divers along with search dogs and team members on kayaks were able to locate the man and pull the body ashore just about 24 hours after he was last seen.
Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue were joined on scene by members of the Sheriff’s Office, Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the Lewis and Clark County Coroner’s Office and St. Peter’s Ambulance.
Spring Meadow Lake was closed to the public while the search was conducted.
