For those of you who have used ScubaBoard for a few years or even a few months you are certainly well aware of the enormous growth we have had. While this growth is great we have have, in our haste to accommodate new interests and new needs, added a lot of forums and cluttered up the board greatly. Later this weekend I will be shutting down the board to do a spring cleaning of sorts. This is the end result of a lot of work by the moderators and by NetDoc and myself. When I am done the board will reopen with all the same threads but a different forum arrangement. A few forums will be consolidated, a few others will be removed, some categories will be merged and others renamed. In the end the vast majority of the forums will remain untouched while those that need to change will. The goal of this cleanup is not to create confusion but rather to prevent it. Right now we have over 300 forums in a half dozen categories and not everything is where it should be. When we are done forums will be in their proper place and if anything, should be easier to find then they are right now.

As a second part of our spring cleanup we are upgrading from our current tiered server setup to a small cluster. This will allow us to greatly enhance the speed of the board especially during peak hours. This move should not take more than a few hours and will be done at the same time as the forum cleanup in order to minimize downtime. This upgrade is a part of our efforts to gear up for the summer and the increased activity that comes with it.

Spring cleaning is all about putting stuff where it belongs, where it should have been from the start but is not. This will mean getting acclimated to some changes but in the long run it should make your time here much more enjoyable while allowing you to streamline your surfing to find what you want, when you want it without sorting through everything else first.

Running SB takes a lot of work (and a lot of hardware) but it's well worth it. Thank you for your understanding and your continued involvement in this community, your community.

NO system malfunctions this time please!!

I would be happy to see anything that does not directly pertain to diving go bye, bye. I don't care about someone's latest recipe for do it yourself Cheeze Whiz, etc. Anything that at least remotely relates to diving is good (nutrition for divers, etc.).

Thanks, Ted, for all the incredible work and passion you put into this board. And thanks for the alert about the off-line time...now I can plan ahead to avoid withdrawal symptoms by staying active, trying not to think about the Board, mumbling a soothing mantra repeatedly, and eating chocolate. I can do this! I'll be OK...
Also, thanks for the wonderful ScubaBoard banner for the SoCal Wrinkles Dives. That thing practically glowed in the overcast at Casino Point on Saturday. Thanks bunches!

We shut things down most every Sunday for an hour or so, this will just be a bit longer. If all goes well we may be able to do the cleanup and move in under 3 hours but if we have to take the long route it could be 12 or more hours :(

We have something in the works for those of you who just want to stick to the "Scuba" part of ScubaBoard :diver:

12 hours!!! Maybe I had better get my therapist appointment made just in case. I get cranky without SB.

It was about time !! I was sure that Tech admin, mods and Netdoc were aware that scubaboard slowly becomes user unfriendly with so so so many forums around covering similar issues! I am sure that the cleanup will lead to a streamlined board easier for all of us...

Keep u the good work,

Manogr

The cleanup should make it easier to find the right forum and it will certainly make navigation easier for our new users. Of course we can only make so many changes at a time; our spring cleaning should do a lot but who knows, we have have to follow up with more changes in the future.

It may be a good idea to announce which forums will be removed. In case anyone want to save information from those forums.
