We have been diving in St. Vincent and Bequia for the last week and have seen a large number of dead spotted Moray Eels. Some were quite freshly dead and fully intact with no signs of violence or injury. I checked on the net and it seems there was a similar wave of deaths in Bonnaire in late 2008. Anything we should do?

I have never heard of this, but will certainly monitor with interest.

On Bonaire, the primary victims were spotted morays. Green morays, never as abundant as spotted, became almost non-existent in a few months. Other eel species were also hit. The culprit, it seems, was a bacterium that is indigenous and sweeps through various locations every once in a while. The green morays have returned to Bonaire, although are not as abundant or as big; the spotted morays seem as abundant as ever, maybe even more so. For more information, see THIS PAGE.
