You won't typically see this covered in the AOW class. Unless you take the class in an altitude location, where they might cover it some, but that's not what the class is about.

Several of the certification agencies have an "Altitude Diver" speciality class.

Here is a link to the PADI one. I'm sure you can check the other agencies sites for the others.

I appreciate the info Mike. Gives me somewhere to look now.

Ultimate Fly Fisher:
What class would I take to learn how to dive at altitude. Is this covered in the AOW course? I would love to dive some of the lakes in the Sierra's.
Thanx
Gerald :dazzler1:

Just curious, why would you love to dive these lakes?
Personally I've never seen anything in freshwater diving.
Too little life and too many ear infections.

Give me salt water any time. :eyebrow:

I'm a biologist and love to look at wildlife in different environments. Not only that diving is diving. In some of the clear lakes in the Sierra's Trout school and provide a spectacular site. Besides I live closer to lakes than the ocean. ;)

I did altitude as part of my advanced class. The specialty class that Mike reffered to would probably be a little bit more in depth than what I did, but I feel comfortable with what I got from the advanced class.

To echo a recurring SB theme, the instructor is as important as the LDS. I took the Altitude specialty class from a trusted LDS and ended up with an instructor that was a moron. If I hadn't done my own research, I probably wouldn't have known that he was giving us bad info.

Certainly take the class, but try to screen your instructor, and don't take his word for anything. Read and think.

Just my personal prejudice...

Altitude diving was part of my AOW.

Considering I live a mile up, I guess it was a no-brainer.
