Spearing Cod?

Anyone have any experience spearing cod? Say if you locate them on a fish finder and bail over and swim down will they scatter?

I was free diving around some kelp in about 40 feet of water near Boothbay Harbor in Maine and i speared a couple of cod. I guess i was lucky to run into them especially near the shore(about 500 yards off). They didn't seem to care much since i kept going down and they were still there haha. Good luck though.
