Hey I am relatively new to spearfishing, I have used a pole spear before so I have a little knowledge of the basics. Anyhow me and some friends picked up some guns to try yesterday and I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to meet me at boomers or horseshoes la jolla to go spearfishing with so I can observe someone who knows what they are doing. About me: I have been snorkeling all of my life so I am a strong swimmer, I have been diving for a year and a half now and I have gone spearfishing a couple of times before. Any way any help is appreciated I may even be willing to pay for a lesson.

How about filling in your profile, so we know where you are...

RIGHT, like what city, state?

basically know your fish. so many beginners shoot anything, then decide if its edible, or legal size.

if you dive off the so fla reefs, most fish will be undersized. rarely do I see legal groupers speared in ft laud, unless deeper than 60'.

wrecks hold better fish, and winter seems to bring the larger up to shallower waters.

and aim for the gills. (don't destroy the filet)

luck!

For certain, look up your local regulations before you go. It could save your gear.

Jeff/Frenchy,

San Diego is a bit too far for me, and too cold, but if you ever get to the Tampa Bay area, look me up!

A speargun will serve you far better than a polespear anywhere you have better than 10 feet of visibility.

Check the California section on www.spearboard.com, you'll probably come up with some responses there.

BTW, your best shot is to the spine, in or close to the head, from above and behind a fish.
