Going down to NC for my first time. Avid NJ Spearfisherman...any info on spearfishing in NC would be helpful.

What do you want to know? Fishing is good with Grouper, amberjacks, king mackerel, sheepshead. baracuda, alots of good fish. vis is usually good 7+ miles out. Get a fishing license at the local fishing stores. You can buy a 7 day to annual pass. Annual is only $15.

It will also depend on who you go spearfishing with. Some boats buy commercial license to cover all of their divers. Check with them to see if you need a license.

Any recommendations of spearfishing charters in NC??

Morehead City / Beaufort area: Tortuga or Discovery (note: Discovery has 3 boats you want the Captain's Lady which is a 6-pack).

Topsail Island: SpearIt.

Differences I have learned so far: Morehead/Beaufort is closer to deep water and good grouper grounds. Depending how far south you get you can also run into lobsters. A bit longer ride to deep water from Topsail, but there are more live bottom areas, more lobsters and hogfish off that part of the state.
