Lings are pretty stupid, or at least have an underdeveloped sense of self preservation. I have taken them with a stiletto. Lings are often in holes or up against rocks and are easy to approach — I often use only one band. I special ordered a 55cm Mako railgun with two 16mm bands for Northern California. Some guys like mid-handle guns but they are typically more expensive.

Serious spearos don't hold JBL metal guns in very high regard, but they are fine for lings. Having shot a JBL for years, I feel that Mako offers a lot more gun for the money. Their warranty and customer service are world class.

MAKO Spearguns and Spearfishing Gear

Here is photo comparing the two. A rock point is best since Lings are usually up against rocks and non-removable single flopper points are sometimes too long for the flopper to penetrate fully.
