Should the Scuba industry take a position on spearfishing? If
so, should it be Pro or Con? Or should it remain neutral?

It should stay out of it. If they take a stand on spearfishing then they'll have to take a stand on lobstering, then taking artifacts off wrecks, then the taking of shells, then ...
You get the point. Eventually it would even have to take a stand on unsafe divers. You know that ain't gonna happen.

If spearfishing is a legal activity, would a training agency be "taking a stand" if they were to offer a specialty class? I would think that there are certainly some tricks and techniques that come only thru experience and training. Catch limits and the areas open to fishing tend to do a good job in keeping these resources renewable. After all, ASAIK, the NRA doesn't outright condone hunting, just protects a sportsmans rights to do so. Wouldn't you want the scuba industry to do the same for spearfishing, regardless of your personal feelings about it?

to take a stand on ..... taking artifacts off wrecks
I thought most agencies and pretty most people in the industry frowned upon taking artifacts off a wreck?

I personally dont care to go hunting, either above water or underwater, personal thing. I also thought most agencies had a course in their list of specialities that was on hunting?

Coastal Louisiana is a hot bed of spearfishing. The annual Helldivers rodeo was just held and divers from around the country show up for it. When it comes to damage to fish populations divers can't hold a candle to line fishermen. One man with a line can take more fish in a day than 10 divers. Bait on a hook is just a meal to a fish but they learn pretty quickly that a diver is a danger to be avoided. One of the LDS is trying to make a buck by having a spearfishing class. I don't know how well they are doing with it. I believe the scuba industry should stay out of it.

Reason for diving...

There is a book about early SCUBA diving in the US, has some pretty interesting reading on peoples reasons for diving.

As little as 40 or 50 years ago fishing was one of the reasons divers entered the water.

I do not think there is anything wrong with someone showing someone the safe and legal way to take fish, if anything I think it would re-enforce some ethics in the sport...

I think people should do what they want. But I don't like killing fish underwater
because I feel like I am one with them, and killing them is wrong. But that's just me.
I eat fish anywhow, so I guess I'm a hypocrit.

I think it should be kept to specific operators to decided whether or not they want to support sfishing.

Although I understand that the damage caused by sf is nothing compared to commercial fishing, it doesn't seem appropriate to me as I only dive to look at fish. Being on a trip with a diver who is out to kill what I'd only be happy to observe just doesn't appeal.

If it were left up to individual operators, then I would opt not to go diving with an company which endorses sf. Sfmen can then either find an acceptable operator or go diving by themselves (probably better for the sfer anyway).

(Off topic but I really need to throw this in: As for the eariler comment about raping wrecks of their artefacts; I think this is worst kind of behavour a diver can do. At least a sfer's pray species continues to reproduce. A wreck doesn't reproduce its interesting artefacts. Talk about <edit> it up for everyone else! This is something the industry should defiantely regulate.)

I was wondering why no one talks about spear fishing here. I carry my gun if Im doing nothing else, just in case something yummy swims by.

Is a long painful death on the hook or in the net better?
I see less problems with diver using the natural resources of the seas than commercial fisheries. Everyone that dove a spot that was dragged for scallops, knows what I'm talking about. The moon has more life than the bottom of the sea. Everything is destroyed and crushed. Crabs, lobster shredded to pieces. It's awful.
Even with recreational fisheries, regulations should be in place in order to protect the sea from the people that don't have common sense.
