I'm a Fish!
I believe that there is another chatboard which solely talks about these subjects. Do we on SB need a new area to include these people on our chatboard? I thinks why not! What does you think?

Me thinks spearboard.com has got that handled. All a spearfishing forum would do here would be to provide an outlet for those who disapprove of spearfishing to jump on their soapbox and deliver one sanctimonious lecture after another.

I believe a spearfishing section here is both warranted and appropriate.

Sanctimonious lectures can be met with the same response as trolling in the DIR forum....

Excuse me I believe this is called "scubaboard" and a lot of the subscribers spearfish ocasionally and is absolutely appropriate on this form.
I'm sure that with the numbers of newbies also it would or shall I say could be a worthwile addition.
Since when are members of this board worried about discussion and if it comes under some aspect of troll etc. as Genesis said "Sanctimonious lectures can be met with the same response as trolling in the DIR forum...."

First, I spearfish more than occasionally.

Indeed, I am essentially always shooting fish with something. Its just that sometimes it goes either "click" or "whirr" instead of "zing - you're dead!" :D

Actually, on a lot of dives around here I'll take both the camera and speargun, and clip whichever is less desirable at the moment off when I get down there. I've started doing this because it seems that if I take the camera that will be when the 40lb AJ or 30lb grouper is sitting there at the shackle laughing at me for having just a camera, and of course if I take the gun there'll be not a fish of legal size in sight.

I try to remain kind of neutral on the spear fish thing since I am still trying to get my gun wet in the briney deep, and I dont mind jamming to some posts here, but not sure about a forum. Scott on SpearBoard runs a good ship there for that :D

The bikini section in the tavern is quite enjoyable too :D

I think a spearfishing forum would be appropriate. Why not?
Spearfishing is a very active area of the diving world and should should be included. Spearfishing has changed considerably from what is was in the 50's and 60's. Today most underwater hunters are spearing fish for the same purpose fishermen are hooking them..a food source.

The days when a hundred spearfishermen would pile up several tons of fish in tournaments are no longer prolific. Spearfishermen used to be the norm on dive charter boats. Now they are the exception, if on board at all.

All of the spearfishing I do presently is done from private boats. This seems to be the norm today.

From what I've come to understand, this board is a place where divers, regardless of their diving preferences, can enhance their individual diving knowledge and make contributions that might be beneficial to other divers. Spearfishing is simply another area, as is wreck, cave and numerous other areas of diving.

Why not try it? If it is a flop, then remove it again from the board. The number of views should be self evident.

Regards,

Didn't there used to be a spearfishing forum in the old format? I thought there was, but I could be mistaken.

That I know of there has never been a spearfishing forum on this board.

I have learned alot from spearfishing.com and I have seen a handful of people on both boards.

I am mixed about the presence of another forum on this board. If there is enough discussion about spearfishing in the basic scuba forum, that may assist in prompting the creation of a spear forum.

I do believe that the creation of a spearfishing forum here would likely prompt more protests than it would on a board dedicated to the topic. People can object as long as it is done in a respectful manner on both sides. Hard to do with emotional issues.
