spear adapter

Hi everyone, I'm going on my first real spearfishing trip in June. Anyways, I've inherited an ol Voit Swimmaster from my dad and rather than rebuild it (front guide was split, needed new bands, etc) I bought a JBL swawed off Magnum. I thought I could use the tips from the Voit since it has the same diameter shaft but the the new gun has NF threads and the old gun has NC. Do any of you know if it is possible to get an adapter of some sort so I can still use the tips?

Rather than adding the weight and drag of an adaptor, why not just cut the inch or so of wrong thread off the shaft and rethread it?

The Voit guns used #12 screw thread. The JBL use 6 mm which is slightly larger. The adapters have become rare. It is possible that JBL might have them but I doubt it. To convert the new arrow, it would be necessary to cut off, turn down with a lathe and rethread with US #12. I don't think it is worth it but.....You might be able to drill the old heads and run a 6 mm X 1 tap into them.

Actualy, that's what I was going to try do tonight or tomorow. As long as I can get a good straight hole with the drill press I have at work. Plan #2 is to take a blank 2 inch piece of SS to a machine shop.

Thanks Pescador, didn't even think that the threads might be metric. Haven't had a chance to measure yet.

Would be better to keep the 6mm thread intact, since when you run out of old spares, you'll be only able to buy 6mm tips.
If you modify the shaft, you'll need a new shaft later.

I modified a shaft, but the length I needed wasn't available so I cutted a longer one and rethreaded it with 6mm.

Thanks for the input Mandy. I wasn't going to cut my new shaft down, I'm planning on cutting the old one down and tapping 6mm threads into it to screw onto the new shaft.
