On the plane last night on my way to Houston, I had time to read the March edition of my ScubaDiving Magazine.

On the front cover, "Dehydration Dangers"

Page 89, the byline reads...
"Dehydration turns your blood to sludege and mind to mush. Here's how to avoid running dry."

The article stresses the importance of hydrating thoroughly before during and after your dives. It goes on to explain how diving causes you to lose fluids and how to avoid excessive fluid loss. Some key tips for doing this:

"Cool the Caffeine"
Stay warm"
"Say yes to carbs"
"Shade your skin"
"Pick juicy fruits"
"Replace your electrolytes"

I thought it was an excellent article, and with such appropriate timing :)

More later...

Give me a call when you have time and also , when was it that you sister was going to be on West Wing

Last time I was on the Careyitos, I noticed that Ricardo was drinking a qt. of Gatorade while we were headed out. I figured he was trying to replenish his" lytes " as he always runs to the marina and is quite dehydrated by the time he gets there. I shared with him the fact that I drink a qt. of Pedialite now before I go diving, used to do the gatorade too. Along with the water I drink in the morning, the pedialite keeps me VERY hydrated. You can get it at Chedraui in qt. bottle, liters?, in several flavors. Just a suggestion, works for me.

Pedialyte is awesome. That works better for me than any sports drink, though the only flavor I like is grape.

"Dehydration Dangers"
This may sound odd but I'm not a huge fan of water... I just don't like the taste (or lack of).

We always head to the Chedraui and pick up packets of powdered drink mixes of Clight (Mexican version of Crystal Light/Kool Aid)... they have some cool flavors like Pina Colada, Lime, Orange/Pineapple etc. Stuff that you can't get in the states.

The packs are for 1.5 liters, the same as the big water bottles that some of the hotels give you. Pour it in and shake... It's definitely easier chugging that than plain water after awhile!

Pedialyte is a great choice, some of the powdered drinks may not be if they have a high sugar content. Sugar laced drinks can actually add to dehydration rather than help, sure, they're better than nothing, but, pedialyte, sports drinks, flavored waters, the kind with not additives like FRUIT 2.0., and good 'ol H20 are your best bets.
I make sure to get LOTS of water before hitting the water every morning, and continue the process at surface intervals and throughout the day. Hey! your in Mexico! It's hot!!
also eat lots of fruit for breakfast and lunch, and watch your alcholol intake during the day, it will also contribute to dehydration. I'm not saying be a tea todeler, just keep up your water intake along with the margaritas.

I stay away from the ones w/ sugar... but then i have to worry about the complications from Nutrasweet and Splenda later on in life. :11:
