I would definitely stay away from hardware store specials. They are meant for faucets and plumbing fixtures. The plumbing psi is no way near scuba psi.
I am not sure how much profit LDS make by selling a kit for $5. Considering the $$ I spent, and will spend there it would seem logical for them to have a large bowl of assortment o-rings for free. They are penny items on the net.
