My wife and I are flying to Belize City and driving down into southern Belize. We are staying at Hamanasi the first part of our trip and are looking for a place in Placencia the second half. We're hoping to see whale sharks, go to the outer attols and find some adventure tours nearby.

Does anyone have any advice on lodging, things to do, places to eat, etc.?

Placencia is nice. Some of the dives trips do surface intervals and lunch on these tiny islands. Like something out of a movie. Reef is a bit out there, so 30+minute boat rides to get there. Not many dive shops to choose from. I had a nightmare experience with one of them, that has sinces gone out of business, so no worries for you. I then switched to Seahorse diveshop. They were competent enough.

As for lodging, there are a lot of cheap/inexpensive hotels. I stayed at the "PAradise Vacation", one of the nicer cheap places, down past the dock, a bit of a walk to some restaurants, but right by the dive operators and boats. This is down at the tip of the penisula. There are some nicer AIs a little further up the penisula, but out of my price range, if that is what you are looking for.

As for topside activities, not much on land, but there are manatee tours and a boat trip up the monkee river to see the wildlife.

I was in Belize in June and stayed with a couple that has two suites for rent under their home. This is a link to the site. The house is about 15-20 minutes north of Placencia in Maya Beach. I'd highly recommend this house and I plan on staying there when I go back to Belize. As far as restaurants go I loved Mango's on Maya Beach. The rate was $75 per night... The dog visible in some of the pictures is free of charge... His name is Oso..
