I've got time to burn and a passion for pirates.

Do you know any great pirates or sailors slang, banter, growls, sayings or quotes?

A few inspirational classics:

"Shiver me timbers"
"let fly the jolly roger"
"Sharpen yer eyes an' blooden yer knives"
"thar she blows"
"Arrrrh!" and "yarrh!"

(I find all this great stuff useful socially)

great stuff. Always felt that scurvy should be pronounced more like "scerrvy"

What does AVAST mean though?

(Sorry, foreign)

Avast means stop. "avast heaving" means stop pulling on that line ( or stop hurling chunks, as the case may be.)

"scallywags" - great haven't heard that one since I played monkey island on the ol' amiga.

how about

"Here thar be monsters"
