Hi All

Looking to fly from Sorong to Singapore via Jakarta all on one ticket with same terminal on Garuda Indonesia. There’s about a 2 hour transfer time in Jakarta. Does anyone know is this will be enough? Surely I can check bags all the way through to Singapore when I get to Sorong? Is there a transit situation at Jakarta?

Thanks

I have never done this as I live in Jakarta, so surely others will have some better insight. I will note that just because someone did this two months ago or two years ago does not mean it will be feasible next week. Indonesian Airlines' SOPs change all the freaking time and without notice or logic. Sometimes, the changes are for the good; sometimes, they make no sense at all. Just know if the boss wakes up one morning and says we are going to modify check-ins this way now, that is exactly what will happen.

For your plan to work a bunch of things have to happen...

1. The possibly non-Garuda staff in Sorong needs to be able to check you in for an international flight and give you a boarding pass to Singapore.

2. Your baggage needs to transfer to the international side of Terminal 3 without your help

3. Your flight from Sorong leaves on time.

4. You don't have to wait for your baggage in the domestic baggage claim (see #2).

5. Your ten + minute walk from domestic Terminal 3 to international Terminal 3 goes without confusion.

6. You don't have to check in for your international flight (see #1)

7. Security and passport control lines are reasonable.

If all of that lines up, you should be fine. It would be way too much of a gamble for me.

What does “roughly” 2 hours mean ? 2:20 is quite a bit different from 1:40.

@matts1w raises many valid points. Bottom line is if things go relatively smoothly you will be OK, but things very often don’t go smoothly in Indonesia so best to give yourself some extra buffer if you can.

One consideration is if Singapore is your final destination or not. Not necessarily the end of the world if you miss one flight to Singapore and have to fly out 12 hours later , but much bigger issue if you are going onward from Singapore on another airline .

I am actually flying the same Sorong to Singapore route in February. Last month Garuda changed the schedule for my Jakarta Singapore leg by 3 hours (thankfully this lengthened my relatively tight Jakarta layover/connection and shortened my long Singapore layover ). These relatively large schedule changes are quite common.

Btw, I personally am generally willing to run a little more travel risk on the end of the trip than I would on the way out where missing connections means wasting non refundable days at a resort and/or possibly missing a liveaboard . I am retired , so if I get home a day late at end of a trip it’s no big deal. You may be in a different situation.
