Looking at buying a camcorder that'll be used mainly to photograph grandkids but also want one that would be suitable to take diving. Costco has the SR5 for $799 but don't know how good a camera it is. I do know that their are housings available. If anyone can give me a better recommendation for something under $2000 total, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks,

Mike

The only thing you may not like about the SR5 is that it doesn't have a viewfinder. Which limits your housing choice to Ikelite or Ocean Images unless you add an external monitor. Which exceeds your $2k budget. Not that either one is a bad choice. Ikelite uses a mirror and reversing circuitry to allow you to see the viewfinder in the housing.

I think the SR5 is compatible with the O/I HC series housing, which will allow you to open and view the monitor from the back. But it will be closer to $1300-1500 out the door depending on options. One option I'd really consider is their optional MWB control, as that's something that you'll likely find useful underater. I think the Ikelite is $1200 so that just falls within your budget.

Personally I'd find the lack of a viewfinder annoying for bright outdoor surface shooting also as the LCD's tend to wash out in the sun.

here is a video I just shot with it underwater. Keep in mind it went from HD (AVCHD) to MPEG-2 to wmv. Oh and I am a total noob/novice.

Thanks. Nice job if you're a novice. Where did you find the best price on the equipment?

In case you are still looking, I just bought the SR5 and love it. I am still looking to purchase the housing. The other comments are correct. If you want to stay within the $2000 range, you best bet will be to go with the Ikelite housing. A plus for the Ikelite housing is that it comes with the white balance controls (most of the other housings this is an additional cost).
